Second annual Summer Writing Studio

On August 23 & 24, students convened at Barclay Elementary/Middle school for our second annual Summer Writing Studio!

Together, our students and writing tutors spent two days immersed in the world of words. In just two days, we braved Virginia’s 5.8 magnitude earthquake on the third floor of Barclay (first the blackboard rattled, then our table, and then the building!), published a literary magazine, and held an open mic! Students worked hard creating a protagonist as a group, learning about word economy, writing tiny tales, and grilling author Michael Kimball about what it takes to be a novelist. One student called the Studio “one of the best experiences of his life.” Other students said that their least favorite part of the Studio was “that it ended” and “having to go home.” We’re already looking forward to our 2012 Summer Writing Studio!
