Galvanic (adj.): News of 5 weeks of camp this summer!
Every year, when camp ends after an exhilarating week of writing and growing together, the most frequent request from our students is MORE CAMP. We are so excited to announce that, for the first time ever, Writers in Baltimore Schools will partner with YouthWorks to offer a 5-week summer program!
The first four weeks of our new program will unfold at Impact Hub in Baltimore, where twenty high school students will be paid through the YouthWorks program as writing interns. During their internship, they will produce a literary magazine of collected WBS work and plan a day-long creative writing festival for the Fall 2024 elementary/middle school writing clubs. Week 5 will find us heading back to Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland for our traditional residential week-long writing camp. And, as always, we look forward to welcoming you to our capstone reading at Red Emma’s to hear what our writers have been working on.
What the YouthWorks Collaboration Means
YouthWorks is a long-running Baltimore institution operated by the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development. The program brings young people and employers together to create meaningful paid employment opportunities, fostering connections and developing valuable skills.
We're so grateful to have been selected as a YouthWorks site by the Mayor's Office of Employment Development. For us, this collaboration means that 20 Baltimore high school students will be paid $15/hr to work as Writing Interns with WBS. This funding ensures our students will not have to choose between meaningful remuneration and WBS’ enrichment programming and that we will be able to bring the expertise of Baltimore's young writers into our workplace.
We need to raise $25,000 by July 31 to make this program happen!
We could not be more excited to grow our summer program, and we're grateful for your support in helping us do so. Join us in kicking off our expanded summer program by making a gift today!
