What inspired you to work with WBS?

I consider myself to be a very soft spoken and relatively shy person. When I was in the third grade, I discovered the power of the pen and suddenly my voice came to life. All the quips and witty remarks that my younger self couldn’t say aloud became very present on the page. I will forever thank Mrs. Sherman, my English teacher at the time, for helping me find my voice. That journey led me to WBS where I get to spend a little bit of my time helping my students grow as writers and find their own voices as well.

What is your favorite lesson you’ve taught? Why?

About mid semester this spring, our cohort was asked to design a lesson of our own and teach it to our class. I chose to center my lesson around playwriting because the student that I have dubbed “our songbird” has a great love for it and I thought that it would be super fun to explore a genre of creative fiction that is not traditionally covered in the WBS curriculum. I really enjoyed teaching this lesson because my teaching partner and I got to perform the scenes that our students scripted along with them. We all got really into our roles, and everyone left the writing club session with huge smiles on their faces.

What is an unusual skill that you have?

I can beatbox! Perhaps one day, I’ll take up a side hustle as a beat producer in the music industry. Just don’t ask me to do it on the spot because I promise you that I won’t, ha-ha.
